Again way behind on my posting! Here is some recently released work from Warhammer Fantasy roleplay done over at Cubicle 7. These are from two WFRP books, Archives of the Empire II and Empire in Ruins. Both were great projects to be part of and the quiet partners in these images were the producers, Dave Allen and Padraig Murphy, both played a pivotal part in the creation of these.

As for the games themselves. EMPIRE IN RUINS:

In the final part of the five-part series of grim and perilous Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay adventures, a number of threats that the Characters may have thought far behind them reassert their influence. Icons of authority and leadership are found wanting, and the greatest nation in the Old World appears destined to shake itself to pieces. Only by undertaking a dangerous journey can the Characters prevent the ruination of all they hold dear.

And WFRP Archives of the Empire II:

A fascinating and diverse collection of articles on topics that cover the length and breath of the Old World. This second volume focuses on those towering walls of muscle and fat, the Ogres, who hail from the Mountains of Mourn but make their home across the Empire and indeed the world. Volume II details new locations, careers, and NPCs perfect for inclusion in your next WFRP adventure.

Roscommon Reconstructions

Knockranny Court Tomb

Mihanboy, Portal Tomb

Some pieces commissioned by Roscommon County Council with funding from the Community Monuments Fund 2020 last year, #CMF20. One is of a Court tomb and the other Portal tomb found in the county. It shows the possible other uses of tombs suggested by archaeologists, other than the usual ritual/burial uses.

Tombs of the Neolithic and beyond, are most often focused on the tomb part of their name. But there was only ever a small amount ever buried in these places. This raises the question of what did they do with the other people but more importantly for here, is what were the other uses for these sites if burial was only a small part? These sites were often very visible and obvious important to the community, so we have focused here on the communal possibilities of these tombs.

Knockranny Court tomb

Archaeological evidence shows that burials at these sites was only part of their story, as often they only contain a handful of burials, most likely sacred bones, rather than representative of population at large. These sites were often placed near the farmland of the builders sites and often placed in areas already sacred, either with previous activity or natural features. A tradition of narration would have been probable and mostly genealogical, perhaps using the landscape as a prompt in narration. Here we show this as the site is being used as a teaching tool. To teach the new generation about their ancestors and the world they inhabit, and their place in it.

As for the tombs themselves, court tombs generally had long cairns, usually trapzoidal or rectangular. 25-35m is the common while 40-60m is unusual. Usually the tombs had corbelled roofs, and cairn covering, though there is suggestions that they may have been roofed by timbers too. Courts are often aligned to the rising sun, mostly facing east in the west of Ireland.

Mihanboy Portal Tomb

Portal tombs werent built as tombs as such but were there to display the large stone and show impressive feats of engineering. With the capstone often balanced on the most delicate small points of the uprights supporting it. Usually the upper surface was left natural and weathered while the underside was shaped and dressed.

These sites may also have been places of ceremony, as liminal spaces between the living and the dead. The perception perhaps that the ancestors weren’t far off and inaccessible but still active. People could have entered a trance like state, to meet these ancestors. Hallucinogenic agents may have been used to reach these transcendent states. Not necessarily though, as long periods of dancing, load music and chanting have been known to induce hallucinations, or another world experience. During these ceremonies they could have had a strong emotional experience separate from the every day life, allowing society to break out of its bonds, for people to act in ways they would not usually.

The clothing  in both of these are based on the alpine find of Otzi, a wounded man who died crossing the alps and was frozen for millennia. Besides this these clothes were altered and added to based on evidence from historical & modern evidence from hunter gather & farming groups around the world. There is also an element of local in the clothing, with local animals of the time used, like fox, bear, wolf, goat, dexter cow etc.

Victoriana announced!

In the last few months we at cubicle 7 have been working on our own IP, so Im proud to show off one of my first pieces done for the upcoming game! Its been a real pleasure to work our version of Victorian London, with its unique blend of steampunk, waning magic and historical accuracy.

Thanks has to go to the producer Zak Dale Clutterbuck who has been a big help throughout. One of the great things about working in an RPG company is getting to be one of the first to read the book, so a big shout out to the writer Walt Ciechanowski , for doing such a great job. Speaking of which, here is a recent blog post by Walt:

The end of Castle Wittgenstein

An illustration from a good few months ago. Showing the end of Castle Wittgenstein at the finale of the Death on the Reik. Was a blast doing such a dramatic viewpoint. Worked on this one with the Producer Padráig Murphy, so thanks has to go to him for giving me a hand here!

Shadows in the Mist- Age of Sigmar

Balancing the Scales Cover

The Vault

Signs of Sickness- The start of the plague

Spreading of Sickness

Escape on the Blackfin

We have been mad busy over at Cubicle 7 Entertainment with lots of recent releases. Here are some of the pieces I have done for Age of Sigmar Shadows in the Mist series of games. Showing various parts and scenes within the great city of Anvilgard.

The thanks has to go out to the rest of the creative team who make these things a reality. Firstly the producer, Emmet Byrne, for giving me the freedom to try out new things and helping to make sure it all fits into the Age of Sigmar world. Also to Rory McCormack the graphic designer who has made the books into the real beauties they are. And to the rest of the creative team of writers and artists whom Im just a small part of.

As for the "Shadows in the mist" book series:

"There is a rot in the heart of Anvilgard. While the Anvils of the Heldenhammer looked outward, a cabal of Aelven outcasts has taken root within the city. Known as the Blackscale Coil, this mysterious group has infiltrated every facet of Anvilgard’s society, and seeks to make the city their own. But the Coil is not all there is to worry about – an even greater threat lurks in the mist…"

Altdorf Crown of the Empire cover is out!

The cover I did for our, Cubicle 7 Entertainments upcoming Altdorf region guide book has just been released as part of a competition, which you can see more in the link below.

Thanks has to go first off to the producer Dave Allen for his help and ideas along the way, from conception to final tweaks. Also to Sam Manley who did work on the action figures. And to Rachael Macken for the graphic design. And ofc to the many many creative people involved in one of these books, its great to be part of such a hive of creativity we have going on there.

As for the book itself:

Altdorf: Crown of the Empire is a fascinating and entertaining 224-page guidebook to the capital. Standing on the confluence of two of the greatest rivers in the Empire, Altdorf is a nexus of power: government, religion, magic and military.

Wrath & Glory: Forsaken System Player’s Guide, 40K

Agri World

Mining on Avachrus

Silo Agri world

Knight Parade, Knight world

Only have time to post about once a month nowadays, so good bit behind things. Catching up, here are some recent pieces I did for our, Cubicle 7 Entertainments, Wrath & Glory: Forsaken System Player’s Guide recently.

Alot of the credit has to go out to the producer Zak Dale Clutterbuck for giving the time to find a unique way of describing the world of 40K.  And of course not to forget, all the other creatives who worked on the game, from the graphic design, to writers, editors, other artists and many other creative inputs involved who made it come to life. As for the game:

Cut off from the might of the Imperium by the Great Rift, and beset on all sides by the daemonic forces that emerge from the tear in reality, the Gilead System stands as a bastion of faith in the Emperor. Unable to call for reinforcements or escape the System, the citizens of these planets fight to preserve the Imperial Creed as they battle back the vile xenos, corrupted renegades, and foul daemons that assail them.

Age of Sigmar, Starter set- Final pieces

My final batch from Age of sigmar starter set. These ones were such a blast, as they are all part of one sequential story/adventure, journeying deep under brightspear and eventually coming out for the grand finale. I loved going on this journey with the players, using the colours, lighting, and compositional elements, building up tension slowly to the final action packed ending. Also got to design some cool spaces, the age of sigmar setting has much potential for imaginative ideas!

These images were all for the recently released starter set, which helps players enter the world of Age of Sigmar.  Not only do you get a complete learn-as-you-play adventure, you also get a guide to the city of Brightspear and eight new one-page adventures.

Art direction & produced by Emmet O' Bryne, written by Jacob Rogers, graphic design by Rory McCormick, along with many more talented artists, writers and other creatives who helped make the book a reality. You can get the PDF now or find out more about the game here:

Middenheim: City of the White Wolf out now!

Cover for the Middenheim city guide

One of the bridges into Middenheim

Crowds push their way into the city of Middenheim

Streetview of the city

The famed hazardous cheap way up to the city, via its chair lifts

Ancient Earthwork at Middenheim

The Morrspark cemetery at the city

Guard dog for the interior

Wanted posters

Here are the images I did for our, Cubicle 7 Entertainments, recently released Middenheim City of the White Wolf. This was such an amazing project to be part of! From the cover to lots of interior pieces of the city, I got to dig in deep into the world building of this amazing Warhammer city. From doing this sort of thing on my own, where I used to do lots of sketches, paintings and maps building up my own cities, to now getting to do this professionally, I am very lucky that in Cubicle 7 I have had this dream come true.

But no project is the work of one man, and I had some great creative input by Dave Allen, Andy Law & Padraig Murphy. The book was written by Graeme Davis, Dave Allen, Jum Bambra, Sean Masterson. Graphic design by Rachael Macken. As well contributions by many more great artists and creative people! As for Middenheim:

Famed for its impregnability, set atop the mighty Fauschlag, struck flat by Ulric’s fist, Middenheim commands authority over all who stand beneath its towering presence. Hewn from living rock by peerless Dwarf skill, it is a striking fortress city where Ulric, the God of War, Winter and Wolves, reigns supreme. The sacred Eternal Flame burns pure and bright, in the heart of a city famed throughout the Old World, riven by dark cults, clambering merchants, and seditious schemers. Middenheim has little room for heroes, and less time for wasters, but for canny opportunists with the will and grit to carve a small piece of something better? Well, they might stand a chance.

Hell Rides to Hallt Cover

The cover I did for the upcoming PDF adventure- Hell Rides to Hallt is out! Always fun getting to play in the grim and perilous old world! Produced and art directed by Pádraig Murphy,  written by Chris Handley and co-writer David Whitworth. As for the adventure:

Hell Rides to Hallt is an adventure that explores justice, vengeance, and the twisting of old stories and older faiths. On the road to Hallt, with Hexensnacht perilously close and Morrslieb hanging gibbous in an ominous sky, a coach clatters through the night. Inside, a city-soft lawyer scoffs at tales of a headless horseman scouring the lands, taking heads and leaving widows in his wake. Outside, the heavy beat of galloping hooves draws close.

Age of Sigmar: Starter set is coming!

Brightspears High port, the central port of the city. Was alot of fun designing this one, one of the best things about Age of Sigmar is how far you can go with the imaginative design like this.

The centre of the brightspear city shown from below. This was based on an earlier design, shown in the next image. This shows a street level view from the lower city and the under mechanisms of how the central disk moves up and down, using escapement, the screw and cogs.

Design and overview of the city of the brightspear. We went through a few iterations of this design back at the core book before we boiled it down to this final design

The starter set game book in the age of sigmar universe is coming out soon! Here is some pieces I did from around the city of Brightspear! Was great working with the team filling out and exploring the city, something I always dreamed I would have a chance to do. Something about being part of a team making an entire city from scratch, its the ultimate experience in imaginative world building. Art direction & produced by Emmet O' Bryne, written by Jacob Rogers, graphic design by Rory McCormick. As for the book:

The Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Soulbound  Starter Set contains everything needed to have adventures in the Mortal Realms! The Starter Set is chock-full of useful things for your Soulbound game. Not only do you get a complete learn-as-you-play adventure, you also get a guide to the city of Brightspear and eight new one-page adventures — each of these can easily provide a session or two for your group and come with the monsters and information needed to run the adventure (including a few new ones for those of you with the core rulebook). These adventures highlight some of the unique locations in Brightspear, bringing the city to life as a great place to set your first Soulbound campaign.

Ravenous-Age of Sigmar: Blood Tide

Another piece for our exciting new release over at Cubicle 7, ‘Blood Tide’. This was one of those pieces where I just set pen (albeit wacom pen) to paper (tablet paper) and it made itself, just came out of the values. This shows an encounter between a flesh eater court ship and the boat of the RPG players, Blackfin. Trt directed and produced by Emmet O'Bryne, and written by Jacob Rogers, graphic design by Rory McCormick. More about the adventure here:

'Its your funeral' game-Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

A recent piece done for another fun game over at Cubicle 7 called 'Its your Funeral'. Was great to dip into this book and get to do a Morrspark! Written by Graeme Davis and art directed and produced by Pàdraig Murphy.  More about the adventure:

"The Garden of Morr is the ultimate levelling ground for the great, the good, and the grubby. Regardless of rank or social status, there is room in Morr’s realm for all those who shuffle, march, or otherwise stumble off this mortal coil. Granted, some of these graves are a little less well presented than others, and the space given over to paupers is little better than a pit, but even so…"

Age of Sigmar- The Mortal Realms

Chamon- Realm of metal

Ghur- The realm of beasts

Ghyrian- Realm of Life

Hysh- Realm of Light

Ulgu- Realm of Shadows
More pieces I did for our (Cubicle 7) recently released Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound RPG. This time it shows some of the realms in the world of Age of Sigmar. One of the challenges in working in age of sigmar was trying to create a piece that represented each realm. Now the lads over at Games Workshop had produced images for each before, to various degrees, sometimes just one image, other times several. So there was alot of leeway there and for some it took us quite a bit to come up with something but in the end we did. More about each realm can be found here:

Temple to Sigmar- Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound corebook

One of the early pieces I did for our recently released Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound RPG. Before working on Sigmar, I had always worked on fantasy that stuck fairly close to realism/history, like lord of the rings or warhammer fantasy, which were great to work on too. But with Sigmar, I got to play with a whole new world of effects, atmosphere and.... what can only be called AWESOME! Its such a great experience leaving the imagination go wild and running with it. A good rule of thumb with Sigmar, any time you find yourself thinking wouldnt be amazing if... you can just put that right in!

Survival- Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound corebook

Another piece in the corebook of our (Cubicle 7 Entertainment) Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound RPG. Showning an inventive form of farming, showing vertical gardens. Also had some fun using an escapement mechanic to drive elevators up and down, dont try it home folks! Produced and art direction from Emmet Byrne.

Shyish- Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound corebook

One of the great experiences I had in the corebook of our (Cubicle 7 Entertainment) Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound RPG,  was to take a hand at glimpsing into each mortal realm within the Age of Sigmar universe. This one shows a glimpse into the realm of death, Shyish. Trying to paint something as imaginative as this was great, as you just let loose and let the imagination take you where it will. With reference of course to the great work already done in Games Workshop. Produced and art direction from Emmet Byrne.
